Forty is not the problem. The collar is.

A stranger reads your collar and your hem long before they work out how old you are. What makes a T-shirt look dated on a man over forty is a stretched neckline, a long square hem and a shoulder seam that has slid down the arm, in that order.

None of it is about the man wearing it. Fix the garment and a plain tee is the easiest thing in your closet again. Full disclosure before the advice: the Nick and the Joey are ours.

What actually makes a T-shirt look old on a man over 40?

Three faults, all on the shirt rather than on you: a collar that has lost its spring, a hem that sits square and low, and a shoulder seam that has slid down the arm. Fading is not one of them.

Run these four checks on whatever you have on right now.

Four Checks, Four Verdicts

Pull the collar an inch off your neck and let go.

If the ribbing stays open or waves at the edge, the shirt is finished. That is a knit that has stopped recovering.

Replace it

Stand straight and find where the hem stops.

Past your fly and cut square across reads cheap at any age. You want mid fly, with the side a touch higher than the front.

Replace it

Put a finger on the shoulder seam.

It belongs on the corner of your shoulder. An inch down the arm and the whole shirt hangs late. See where every seam should land.

Replace it

Look at the color in daylight.

A black gone faintly grey is the one thing here that is not a fault. Honest fade on a shirt that holds its shape looks lived in.

Keep it

Does hem shape matter more after 40?

Yes. Most men wear the shirt untucked, and an untucked hem is the lowest horizontal line on your body. A curve shortens that line at the sides and stops the shirt reading like a box.

That is why we cut the Nick with a curve and the Joey straight, and which of the two is yours is that one habit. If the hem question is really a midsection question, the answer is in the guide written around the middle.

The shirt you have owned longest is almost always the one working hardest against you.

Fitted or relaxed, once you are past 40?

Fitted at the shoulder and chest, not through the waist. A shirt that skims the body and releases below the ribs looks deliberate. One that grips the stomach and one that hangs off you both look accidental.

Raise both arms. If the hem climbs above your belt and stays there, the shirt is too narrow. If you can gather a fistful at your side, it is too wide. Stretch solves both, which is why the Joey runs 60 percent cotton, 35 percent rayon and 5 percent spandex. Same fabric in the Nick, cut slimmer. Both are up against the brands most men already own in the everyday roundup.

Which colors are worth buying at this point?

Black, white and one warm neutral carry nearly everything you own. Buy a muted color before a second black, because five black tees is a uniform rather than a wardrobe.

Soft blues and greens behave like neutrals once they are muted enough, which is why the two above sit next to denim and khaki quietly.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of t-shirt should a 45 year old man wear?

A solid crew neck fitted at the shoulder and chest, with a hem stopping around mid fly. No large graphics, no deep V. The PILLAR Nick Tee at $45 is the one to wear untucked, a slim fit with a curved hem. The PILLAR Joey Tee at $45 is the one to tuck, straight hem and four way stretch so it stays put.

Are graphic tees okay for men over 40?

Small ones are fine. What dates a man is not the graphic but its size and subject: a chest wide print, a slogan, or a band you last saw in 1998 all read as costume. A solid shirt is the safer default, and one printed tee in the rotation is plenty.

Should a man over 40 size up in a t-shirt?

Not as a rule. Sizing up to hide a midsection gives you a longer, wider shirt that drapes off the stomach and makes it more obvious. Buy your true size in a cut that is slim at the shoulder and releases below the ribs.

Can you still wear a white t-shirt after 40?

Yes, on one condition: it has to be new. White is the least forgiving color a man owns, because thinning, yellowing at the collar and grey underarms show on it first. Treat it as a consumable and replace it yearly.

What is the best t-shirt to wear untucked over 40?

One with a curved hem stopping around mid fly, because the curve shortens the lowest horizontal line on your body and keeps the shirt from reading like a box. The PILLAR Nick Tee is cut that way at $45.
