T-Shirts for a Dad Bod: Tailored Beats Slim, and Here Is Why
Style
No T-shirt hides a stomach. What a good one does is stop advertising it, and that comes down to one thing: whether the shirt hangs off your chest or follows you down to the hem.
Most advice here is a product list with no reason attached. The short version: a shaped cut comes in at the waist and then has to go back out, and that second move is what the eye reads. A straight bodied cut never makes it.
Which T-Shirt Actually Works on a Dad Bod?
A tailored cut with a straight bottom edge, in a mid to dark matte color. Of our two cotton blend cuts that is the Joey Tee, not the slim Nick.
Five checks, one minute
Trace the side seam. If it pulls inward at your waist, the shirt has to stretch back out below it.
Pinch the front at your belt. Fabric you lift away is hanging. Fabric that comes with you is reading you.
Look for a dip in the hem. Lower corners pull the eye wide. A straight cut is one flat line.
Raise both arms, then drop them. It should fall back on its own, not park above the waistband.
Tilt it under a light. A dry, matte face gives the eye nothing to follow. A sheen gives it plenty.
Four of the five are about the shirt, not about you. Run them on what you already own.
Why Does a Slim Fit Make It Look Worse?
Because a slim cut is shaped. The pattern narrows through the waist on purpose, so on a wider middle the knit stretches to get past, and stretched knit sits tight to what it covers.
Slim is not a smaller tailored, it is a different shape, and the difference lives in the side seam. Our Nick Tee is slim with a curved hem and it is a good shirt on a lean frame. Sizing up does not fix it here, because a bigger slim shirt is still shaped. More on what room a cut gives you.
The Joey is tailored with a straight cut hem. It keeps shape through the chest and arms, so it never reads as a box, but the body runs straight down to one flat edge.
A shirt cannot hide anything. It can only decide whether it is reading you or hanging off you.

Does Color or Cut Do More Here?
Cut does more, by a wide margin. A mid to dark matte surface reflects less, so there is less highlight for the eye to read shape from, but no color rescues a shirt stretched tight.
Black, charcoal, deep navy, muted olive and wine all do this job. A shiny knit works against you, because a sheen draws a bright line along whatever curve it sits on. That is the honest limit on performance fabric: our Tim Tee moves sweat well, but it sits closer and reflects more.
One thing most size guides skip. Our run stops at XXXL, and five colorways are out in Large today, including the Charcoal Grey and Maroon Joey. Black is stocked all the way through.
The Part That Is Not the Shirt
An open layer and a waistband that sits where it should. A quarter zip worn open puts two vertical edges down the front, and a pant worn at the waist stops pushing the middle out.
The layer is the cheapest change here, because it works on any shirt you own. Unzipped, the eye follows two front edges down instead of across you. For something warmer the Alec Crew in dark green is long enough to stay put.
The waistband matters as much. Pants worn under the stomach make it the widest point you have. Worn at the waist, the leg runs clean underneath. It is also why tucking is a hem question. Wide up top instead? Buy on the shoulder.

Frequently Asked Questions
What T-shirt is most flattering if you carry weight around your middle?
A tailored cut with a straight bottom edge in a mid to dark matte color. Tailored keeps shape through the chest and arms but runs straight through the body, so the knit never stretches across your stomach and lies tight to it. Skip slim cuts.
Why does my T-shirt pull across my stomach but fit everywhere else?
Because the pattern is shaped. Slim and athletic cuts narrow through the waist by design, so there is less room there than at the chest. On a wider middle the knit stretches to get past, and stretched knit lies flat against what it covers. Going up a size only gives you a bigger version of the same shape.
Do darker T-shirts actually make you look slimmer?
A little, and finish matters as much as the shade. A dark matte surface reflects less light, so there are fewer highlights for the eye to read a curve from. The effect is real but small next to cut, and a dark shirt that is too tight still looks tight.
What sizes do PILLAR T-shirts go up to?
XXXL, though not every colorway is stocked that far. The Joey Tee and Nick Tee in black are both available today from Small through XXXL, and the Alec Quarter Zip runs the same range. All three tee cuts run true to size.
