Long Sleeve or Short Sleeve T-Shirt: Which One to Buy
Wardrobe
Short sleeve is the tee you own in quantity and long sleeve is the one you own in ones, because a long sleeve tee spends most of its life as a layer rather than as the whole outfit. Reach for the long one when something is going over it, or when a room is cool enough that bare forearms look underdressed.
That split catches people out. A long sleeve tee gets bought the week the mornings turn cold, worn twice, then sits. It is a good shirt. It is just not a warm one.
Which Sleeve Length Do You Buy More Of?
Short sleeve, by a wide margin. It is the whole top half of an outfit on its own, so it carries most of the week. A long sleeve usually needs something else in the picture first.
Count the days you leave the house in one shirt and nothing over it. For most men that is the bulk of the year, so a drawer wants several short sleeves across two cuts and one or two long sleeves at the back. Short sleeves are also what packs into a carry on without an argument.
When a Long Sleeve Earns the Slot
When it is the bottom of a stack, when the air is cool and still, or when you want your arms covered without adding weight. None of those three is actual cold, which is where most men go wrong at the register.
What to Reach for Instead
The usual move
Buy a long sleeve tee because the mornings turned cold.
The better one
Buy a short sleeve and something that goes over it. One comes off at noon.
The usual move
Size up the long sleeve so it clears another shirt underneath.
The better one
Keep your size. The long sleeve is the bottom of the stack, not the top.
The usual move
Shove the sleeves up once the room warms.
The better one
Wear the short sleeve and carry the layer. Shoving is what kills a cuff.
The long sleeve tee competes with your mid layers, not with your tees. If the question is warmth, the crewneck against the hoodie is the argument you are really having, and a vest or a quarter zip settles a cold morning faster than a second knit will.
Does a Long Sleeve Tee Fit Differently?
Only below the elbow. Shoulder, chest and hem follow the same rules as any tee, but the sleeve adds two checks: where the cuff lands on your wrist, and whether the forearm is trim enough to slide under something.
The cuff should sit on the wrist bone with your arm down and stay there when you reach. Past the knuckles it looks borrowed, short of the wrist it looks outgrown. A loose forearm bunches the second a sleeve goes over it, the same reason a tee that goes under a jacket has to be trim through the arm. The Tim Longsleeve runs on the same block as its short sleeve, so sizing carries across.

Can You Wear a Long Sleeve Tee in Summer?
Yes, in dry heat and in air conditioning, as long as the knit is light and the fit is trim. Covered arms in a thin shirt beat bare arms under a vent.
The summer version is a wicking knit in a pale shade, not a heavy cotton in black. Sun is the other honest reason: an arm under fabric all afternoon is one you are not reapplying anything to. What fails is a thick long sleeve outdoors at noon.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a long sleeve or short sleeve tee better for layering?
Long sleeve, if the layer going over it has sleeves of its own, because the cuff stops a jacket or knit sleeve from sitting on bare skin. If the layer is a vest, or an open shirt you plan to push back, a short sleeve is cleaner. A doubled sleeve is the part that bunches.
How many long sleeve t-shirts does a man need?
One or two is enough for most wardrobes. The shirt gets used in a narrow band of conditions, cool and still or under something else, so a second only earns its place if the first is in the wash when you want it. Spend the rest on short sleeves, where the wear is.
Is a long sleeve t-shirt warmer than a short sleeve one?
Slightly, and less than people expect. The extra fabric covers the forearms, which helps in still air, but a knit that thin traps little heat on its own. If you are cold, a mid layer over a short sleeve does far more than swapping one tee for another.
Should a long sleeve t-shirt fit tighter than a short sleeve?
No, the body should fit the same. The difference is the arm. A long sleeve wants to be trim from elbow to cuff so it slides under a jacket without gathering, and the cuff should rest on the wrist bone. Buy your usual size and judge it at the forearm.
