The vest wins the round. The quarter zip wins the day.

A 7:10 tee time in October starts near 60 degrees and finishes near 95. That swing is the whole argument.

The short answer

Wear the vest when you are going to swing a club, throw a ball, or move hard while it is still cold. Wear the quarter zip when you are mostly standing, sitting, driving or watching. The vest frees your arms and traps core heat. The quarter zip covers your arms and comes off in one motion when the sun clears the ridge.

Arizona fall is not a season, it is a daily temperature swing of 30 to 40 degrees. From late September through November, mornings run cool enough that you want a layer and afternoons climb back into the 90s. Buying one warm thing for the whole season is how people end up carrying it for four hours.

So the real question is not vest or quarter zip in general. It is which one for what you are doing, and how fast you need it off. Here is the call, by activity and by temperature.

The head to head

Sleeveless is the point. Your shoulders and arms stay completely free through the swing while your core keeps the heat it made walking to the first tee. The blade collar sits flat under a chin, the finish sheds a sprinkler head you misjudged, and it packs down small enough to live in a golf bag from October to March.

Mid weight, not thick. The quarter zip is the layer you wear from the car to the office to the patio, adjusting the zip instead of taking it off. Ribbed cuffs keep the sleeves where you put them. This is the one for range sessions, morning walks, travel days and any morning where you will not be swinging at full speed.

Check the temperature at your start time, not the daily high. That one habit fixes most Arizona layering mistakes.

Start temp What to wear What happens by hole nine
Under 50 Quarter zip over a long sleeve, vest on top if it is windy Quarter zip is in the cart, vest stays on
50 to 60 Vest over a polo or performance tee Vest comes off around hole six, polo carries the rest
60 to 70 Vest, unzipped, or nothing at all if you walk fast You are in short sleeves and glad you skipped the sleeves
Over 70 No layer. A hat instead. Nothing to carry

Wind changes this by roughly ten degrees. A 62 degree morning with a 15 mile per hour breeze off the desert feels like low 50s on the exposed holes, which is exactly when the vest earns its price. For the full breakdown of that specific problem, read the Arizona wind guide.

What goes underneath actually decides it

A layer only works if the shirt under it is doing its job. Cotton under a vest is the reason people say layers make them sweat. A moisture wicking base moves the sweat out, the vest holds warmth in, and the two stop fighting each other.

Under the vest

A polo. The collar reads correctly at every course in the valley and the vest sits cleanly over it. If you are still working out your polo fit, the polo fit and fabric guide is the place to start.

Under the quarter zip

A performance tee. Nothing collared, nothing bulky at the neck. The quarter zip already gives you a collar.

Buy one first, not both

If you play more than twice a month in Arizona, the vest is the better first purchase, because sleeveless covers a wider temperature band here than sleeves do. Our mornings are cool for about three hours, not all day. If you spend more time between things than on a course, buy the quarter zip first. It is the layer you will wear on days you never planned to be outside.

Either way, one good layer beats three mediocre ones. That argument is made in full in the case for buying fewer, better pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a vest warm enough for golf in Arizona in the winter?

For most mornings, yes. Phoenix and Scottsdale winter tee times usually start between 45 and 55 degrees and warm quickly. A vest over a long sleeve base covers that range. On the coldest handful of mornings each year, a quarter zip under the vest is the answer rather than a heavier coat.

Can you wear a vest on a golf course with a dress code?

Yes. A collared vest over a collared polo meets every standard public and resort dress code in the Phoenix area, and most private clubs as well. The rule that matters is the collar underneath, not the layer over it. Avoid hoodies at private clubs unless you have checked.

Should a golf vest be tight or loose?

Close through the chest, never tight through the shoulders. You should be able to make a full backswing without the armholes pulling. If the vest lifts off your lower back when you address the ball, it is too small. If it flaps in wind, it is too big.

Quarter zip or hoodie for cool weather?

Quarter zip if a dress code is involved or you want to look put together. Hoodie for the gym, weekend mornings and travel. The quarter zip also vents better, because you can open the neck without taking the whole thing off.

What do you wear under a quarter zip?

A moisture wicking performance tee. Skip cotton, which holds sweat against your skin and makes the layer feel clammy within twenty minutes of moving.
