What T-Shirt to Wear Under a Blazer
Style
Under a blazer, a T-shirt has to be plain, opaque and trim through the shoulder. The jacket hides the sides and leaves the collar, the chest and the hem on display, next to a tailored edge that makes every soft spot obvious.
Most advice on this pairing is a gallery of finished outfits. Navy jacket, white tee, clean sneakers, repeat. That helps if the right shirt is already in your drawer, and not at all if the shirt is why the look falls flat. Here is the other half, from the tee up.
What a Blazer Leaves Showing
A jacket covers the outer third of the shirt on each side. What stays in view is a strip down the front, the collar above the lapel, the sleeve ends and the hem below the button.
Worn alone, a tee is judged as a whole garment and a mediocre collar disappears into the shape. Put a jacket over it and that collar sits isolated against a lapel.
What Stays in View
The collar
Sits above the lapel all evening. A rib gone wavy or slack is the first thing anyone sees.
The shoulder line
The jacket shoulder lands on top of it. A seam hanging past your shoulder bone shows as a ridge under the cloth.
The front strip
About a hand's width down the middle, the only place a thin shirt gives away what is under it.
The hem
Framed below the button by two cut edges, the one place a tee hem gets compared to tailoring.
Get those four right and the rest can be anything.
The Shoulder Decides Everything Else
Buy the tee on its shoulder seam. A jacket shoulder has structure built into it and sits straight across whatever the shirt underneath is doing.
This is where an oversized tee loses. A dropped shoulder puts a seam and a fold of spare fabric two inches down your arm, the jacket lays a clean line over it, and the result is a bump no adjusting fixes. A trim cut has nothing to bunch.
Both our everyday tees are cut for this. The Nick Tee runs slim, the Joey runs tailored, and either puts the seam where your shoulder ends. The fit guide covers that landmark. The sleeve matters for the same reason, since it has to sit inside a jacket sleeve without gathering.
Which Hem Goes Under a Jacket
A straight cut hem. It ends on one level line, so the shirt below the jacket button reads as deliberate rather than caught mid untuck.
A curved hem dips at the front and back and rises at the sides, which is what you want when the shirt is worn alone over denim. Put a jacket on and that dip lands in the gap below the button, so the eye reads the lowest point instead of a line.
Our two cuts split on exactly this. The Joey carries a straight cut hem and the Nick a curved one, and they are otherwise the same 60% cotton, 35% rayon and 5% spandex at the same price. For a jacket, take the Joey. Worn alone, the Nick has the better hem, and the tucking guide covers that split.

When a Tee Is the Wrong Call
Any room where the jacket is doing formal work. Under a suit at a wedding, an interview or a client pitch, a tee reads as underdressed however good it is.
A blazer worn casually and a suit jacket worn properly are different garments doing different jobs, and only the first invites a tee. The test is whether the jacket came with matching trousers. If it did, put a collar on.
One honest exclusion, ours included: a performance tee is the wrong shirt here. Polyester has a sheen and a technical hand that reads as training gear against wool, so keep a cotton blend for the jacket. If the real question is the office, whether a tee clears business casual is its own answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of T-shirt do you wear under a blazer?
A plain, solid, opaque crew neck in a cotton blend, cut trim through the shoulder and sleeve, with a straight hem. No print and no chest logo, because the jacket frames a narrow strip of the front and a graphic sitting half inside it looks unintentional. Black, white and warm neutrals place most easily.
Can you wear a T-shirt with a suit?
You can, but it reads as a fashion choice rather than correct dress and fails in any room with a dress code. A blazer or sport coat is a separate garment worn casually, so a tee suits it. If the jacket has matching trousers, wear a collar.
Should a T-shirt be tucked in under a blazer?
Usually not. An untucked tee with a straight hem sitting just below the jacket button is the standard look and the easier one to get right. Tuck it only if the shirt is long enough to stay put and the belt is worth showing, because a half escaped tuck looks worse than none.
What color T-shirt goes under a navy blazer?
White is sharpest and least forgiving, because navy wool makes a white tee read brighter and exposes any grey in one washed badly. A warm neutral like beige or sand is softer, and black works if the trousers are dark too. Avoid anything close to navy, since a near match looks like a mistake.
Is a crew neck or a V-neck better under a blazer?
A crew neck. It gives the lapel a clean line to sit against and holds it all evening. A V opens into the space the jacket already leaves open, which reads as too much bare chest, and its point stretches out faster than a crew rib.
