What Men Should Wear to Play Golf at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island

The resort states that proper attire is required at all times and that attire is at the discretion of the golf staff, so the safest read is a real golf polo, a tailored short or trouser in a performance fabric, and a belt. That gets you on the first tee without a conversation.

Read the five inch rule literally
Five inches above the knee is a measurement, not a vibe, and it is the only number in the whole policy. Hold your hand flat above your kneecap. If the hem of your short lands higher than roughly a hand's width up, it is the wrong short for this golf course. Most tailored golf shorts sit at or just above the knee and clear the rule without you thinking about it. The shorts that fail are the ones cut for a gym, and those fail twice, once on length and once on the athletic style ban.
People search for the jeans question more than any other part of this dress code, and the answer is short. No. Not in the trouser, not in the short, not in a wash that is trying to pass. Bring a flat front performance trouser or a tailored short and the question never comes up.

Start at the collar
The polo is the one piece the dress code is checking on sight, so buy the one that still looks like a golf shirt on the eighteenth green. Kiawah sits at sea level on seaside links land, dunes and sea oats and marsh on every side, and the humidity does not negotiate. A cotton pique polo drinks that air and goes limp by the turn. A four way stretch nylon polo with a firm collar holds its shape through a full round, which matters more on a course where you are going to be swinging hard into moving air for four hours. The palette out there is bleached sand, sea oat straw and Atlantic grey blue, so white and navy sit in it rather than fight it.

Dress for a wind with no direction
The wind is the reason you pack a second layer, and the reason you cannot pack it based on a forecast. The resort itself says it is unlikely any other golf course in the world outside the United Kingdom and Ireland is affected as much by wind, and that there are no prevailing winds here. Pete Dye answered that by designing two courses in one, a routing for an easterly wind and a routing for a westerly. Players can see up to an 8 club difference on a hole depending on which one shows up. Ten holes hug the Atlantic and eight more run parallel to them, which the resort describes as the most seaside holes in the Northern Hemisphere, so there is no sheltered stretch to hide in.

There are no prevailing winds here. You are not dressing for a forecast, you are dressing for two golf courses that happen to share one piece of land.

Keep the arms out of it
Some days out there the wind matters and the temperature does not, and that is exactly what a vest is for. A 70F afternoon with 12 mph off the water feels cold through the chest and fine everywhere else. A full sleeve layer solves the chest and then follows your arms into the swing. A vest solves the chest and stays out of the way. It also sidesteps the sleeveless problem entirely, because the sleeves the dress code is asking about belong to the polo underneath, and they are still there.

Pack for the cool months
If your tee time falls anywhere between late October and early May, bring a crew. That window is the windier part of the year at Kiawah, with average hourly wind speeds above 11.0 mph from October 27 through May 2, and the cool season from December 3 to March 2 holds average daily highs below 65F. January averages a 60F high and a 43F low. A crew over the polo is the layer that handles an early tee time, a cool clubhouse before and after, and the walk from the range when the sun has not done its work yet.
The mistake in shoulder season is packing one heavy thing instead of two light ones. April averages a 74F high and a 58F low, and October averages 76F and 61F. That is a fifteen degree swing inside a single round, and a single heavy layer cannot track it. Two light layers can.

Walking changes the layering math. You generate your own heat between shots, which means the layer you were grateful for on the first tee becomes a problem by the fourth. That is another argument for a quarter zip or a vest over a fixed jacket, and an argument for layers that fold small enough to live in the bag rather than on the cart you do not have. The course is 18 holes at par 72 on the eastern-most end of the island, designed by Pete and Alice Dye. It hosted the 1991 Ryder Cup and the 2012 and 2021 PGA Championships, which makes it only the fourth course to have hosted each of the PGA of America's major championships.
