What Men Should Wear to Play Golf at The Greenbrier
Denim is the one thing The Greenbrier prohibits outright. A collared sport shirt is the one thing it requires. Between those two lines sit slacks, walking shorts, Bermuda shorts and knickers, all named as acceptable in the resort's published policy, along with golf sweaters, which matters more at a West Virginia mountain resort than it would anywhere warm.
Put on a collared polo, put on slacks or a tailored short, and leave every pair of jeans in the room. That satisfies the written rule with nothing left to guess about. The rest of this guide is about the parts the resort does not publish, and about the climb the thermometer makes between your first tee shot and the turn.

What does The Greenbrier actually require? the rule
One line covers it. The resort publishes a single sentence for golf, the golf academy and tennis, and this is that sentence word for word.
"No denim. Collared sport shirts, golf and/or tennis sweaters, shirts or blouses, slacks, walking shorts, Bermuda shorts, knickers, golf and/or tennis shorts (for tennis only)."
That is the published rule in full, from the resort's own dress code page. Two things deserve a second read. First, denim leads the sentence. It is not a suggestion buried in a list, it is the opening clause, and it applies to every pair of jeans you own regardless of color or cut. Second, look at the parenthetical. Golf and tennis shorts are marked for tennis only. So the short you wear on the golf course here is a walking short or a Bermuda short, which for most men means a tailored short that sits at or near the knee rather than an athletic short with a drawstring.
What the policy does not say
The published golf rule says nothing about hats. It says nothing about shorts length in inches. It says nothing about soft spikes on the golf course. The only footwear line anywhere on that page is a requirement for light colored soles for indoor tennis, and that is a tennis rule, not a golf rule. Anyone who tells you The Greenbrier publishes a spike policy for golf is repeating something they read somewhere else.
There is still a way the first tee looks, and it is worth naming as convention rather than policy. Convention at a resort course of this caliber is a cap worn forward and removed indoors, a short that hits at or near the knee, and a golf shoe with a soft spike or a spikeless sole. None of that is published by The Greenbrier. None of it will get you turned around. It is simply how the group in front of you will be dressed.
Which polo goes in the bag? the shirt
The policy names a collared sport shirt, so the collar has to look like a collar at the end of eighteen holes, not just at the start. That is a construction question more than a style question, and it is the reason collars curl on cheap polos by the back nine.
The shirt that satisfies the rule
$76
84% nylon and 16% spandex, four way stretch, sweat wicking, classic athletic fit, pre shrunk, with a U cut hem that stays tucked through a full swing. The collar is firm, which is the single specification that matters at a course that puts collared sport shirts in writing. Navy is the safe answer under a grey mountain morning and it does not fight anything you pull on over it. If you want the fabric argument in full, read nylon against polyester before you pick.

Why does the morning matter more than the wind here? conditions
Read those four numbers together and the packing decision makes itself. White Sulphur Springs sits at 1,850 feet in the mountains of Greenbrier County, in the southeastern corner of West Virginia. Across October, per Weather Spark, "daily high temperatures decrease by 10 degrees F, from 68 degrees F to 59 degrees F" and "daily low temperatures decrease by 10 degrees F, from 48 degrees F to 37 degrees F."
Now the wind. "The average hourly wind speed in White Sulphur Springs is gradually increasing during October, increasing from 3.8 miles per hour to 4.4 miles per hour," predominantly from the west, "with a peak proportion of 43%." Four miles an hour is not weather. It moves a flag and nothing else. This is not a wind course, and if you have been reading dress guides for coastal golf, throw that framework out here. What you wear at The Ocean Course at Kiawah is a decision about a shell that will not flap. What you wear at The Greenbrier is a decision about a thermometer.
A low near 40 degrees at an early tee time against a high in the high 50s or 60s by the time you walk off is a twenty degree move inside one round. That is the entire problem. You are not dressing for a condition, you are dressing for a change, and the piece that solves it is a layer you can actually shed at the turn without carrying a coat around for nine holes. Worth knowing for a spring or late fall booking as well, since "the cold season lasts for 3.0 months, from December 1 to March 1, with an average daily high temperature below 48 degrees F."
Most dress codes are a list of what to take off. This one puts a sweater in writing, which is the resort telling you what the mornings are like.
What do you put on over it? layers
Three pieces cover every October tee time here, and only one of them is coming home in the same position it started. A second polo for the second round, a quarter zip for the cold start, and a crew for the end of the month and the clubhouse afterward. Everything below lives in the polo collection and the pullover collection.
The second shirt
$76
88% polyester and 12% spandex with a textured hand, four way stretch, sweat wicking, classic athletic fit, U cut hem, pre shrunk. The Brew print is a fine speckle rather than a graphic, so from ten feet it reads as texture and not as a pattern competing with the fall ridges behind it. That is the right register for a course this old. Collar is a proper collar, which is all the policy asks.

The cold start
$98
This is the piece the October low is asking for. Lows falling from 48 to 37 across the month mean an early tee time here starts genuinely cold, and a quarter zip is the only layer that answers a swing that size properly. Zipped to the throat on the range, halfway down by the fourth green, off and in the bag at the turn. Sizes run Small through XXL.

The shoulder season piece
$85
The published dress code names golf sweaters outright, which is a real and quotable reason to pack one for this course specifically. No zipper hardware, no pull tab catching on a glove, and it reads as a sweater in a dining room the way a technical pullover does not. Bring it for the last week of the month and for the hour after the round. Black goes with every polo above.

Walk the thermometer forward and the layering plan stops being theoretical.
| Hour of the round | What the thermometer is doing | What is on | What comes off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Range and putting green | Sitting at the October low, between 48 and 37 degrees F depending on the week | Polo and quarter zip, zipped to the throat | Nothing |
| First tee | Still near the low, sun not over the ridge yet | Polo, quarter zip, crew underneath if it is the last week of the month | Nothing |
| Holes four through seven | Climbing toward the daily high | Quarter zip open at the throat, sleeves doing the work | Gloves or a hand warmer, if you carried one |
| The turn | Most of the twenty degree climb is behind you | Polo, layer carried or tied | The quarter zip goes in the bag |
| Eighteenth green | At the October high, 68 degrees F early in the month and 59 degrees F at the end | Polo alone, collar still holding its shape | Everything you started the round in |
What should you leave in the room? exclusions
Denim, obviously, and this is the one place there is no room to negotiate. The rule opens with it. That covers jeans in any wash, denim shorts and anything cut from denim that you might argue is really a trouser. Leave all of it upstairs.
Here is the one that will surprise you. Leave the vest. A vest is the correct call on a course where wind is stripping heat off your torso while your arms stay warm, and that is not what is happening here. Four miles an hour barely stirs a flag, and it will not pull heat through a polo. What is happening here is a twenty degree change in ambient temperature, and a vest gives you sleeves that are cold at the first tee and a torso that is too warm at the turn. It solves the wrong problem, and it solves it in the one way you cannot undo halfway through. A quarter zip does everything a vest would do here and then gets out of the way. That is a different answer than we would give you at Harbour Town, and the difference is entirely the wind number.
What is the Old White asking of you? the course
The resort has four golf courses, listed on The Greenbrier's golf page, and the Old White is the flagship. Per GolfPass, it was designed by C.B. Macdonald and opened in 1914, with Seth Raynor assisting in construction and overseeing updates in the 1920s. It plays to a par of 70 and stretches to 7,246 yards from the Black tees. Greens are bent grass, fairways are bermuda.
Two practical notes from the same source. Golf carts are included in the green fees, and pull carts are also available, so you get to decide whether you are walking. If you are riding, you sit still for longer stretches of a cold morning, which argues for the extra layer rather than against it. The season runs March 28 through November 30, which means a March or November booking puts you closer to that cold season figure than to the October numbers above.
A course from 1914 at par 70 has an old bones feel to it, and the way men dress there tends to follow. If you have read our guide to Pinehurst No. 2, the register is similar. Nothing loud, nothing technical looking, a proper collar and a layer that would not look out of place in the dining room afterward.
What else do men ask before this tee time? answers
What is the dress code at The Greenbrier golf courses?
The Greenbrier's published dress code for golf reads: "No denim. Collared sport shirts, golf and/or tennis sweaters, shirts or blouses, slacks, walking shorts, Bermuda shorts, knickers, golf and/or tennis shorts (for tennis only)." A collared shirt is required, denim is prohibited, and slacks, walking shorts, Bermuda shorts and knickers are all acceptable.
Can you wear jeans at The Greenbrier?
No. The published golf dress code opens with "No denim," and that applies to jeans in any wash or cut, as well as denim shorts. Wear slacks or a tailored short instead.
Are shorts allowed on the golf course at The Greenbrier?
Yes. Walking shorts and Bermuda shorts are both named as acceptable. Note that the policy marks golf and tennis shorts for tennis only, so the short you wear on the golf course should be a walking or Bermuda short. The resort does not publish a length requirement in inches.
Do you need a collared shirt to play golf at The Greenbrier?
Yes. Collared sport shirts are the first item named in the published golf dress code. A performance polo with a firm collar satisfies it.
What should you wear for an early October tee time at The Greenbrier?
A collared polo with a quarter zip over it. Across October, daily lows in White Sulphur Springs fall from 48 degrees F to 37 degrees F while daily highs fall from 68 degrees F to 59 degrees F, so an early tee time starts cold and warms roughly twenty degrees by the turn. The quarter zip comes off at the ninth and goes in the bag.
Is a sweater allowed on the golf course at The Greenbrier?
Yes. The published dress code names golf sweaters directly, alongside collared sport shirts. A crew neck pullover with no zipper hardware is a clean way to take that permission, and it carries into the clubhouse afterward.
When is the golf season at The Greenbrier?
The Old White course runs from March 28 through November 30. Bookings at either end of that window sit closer to the cold season, which lasts three months from December 1 to March 1 with average daily highs below 48 degrees F, so pack a heavier layer for a March or late November round.
What fabric works best for a cold morning round?
A stretch performance knit that wicks, under a pullover you can shed. Nylon and spandex give you a firmer collar and a smoother hand, polyester and spandex give you more texture. Either is a better base layer for a morning like that than cotton, which holds sweat from the warm up and stays damp against you for the rest of the round.
Pack for the first tee and the turn
One collar that satisfies the written rule, one layer that comes off at the ninth. That is the whole Greenbrier kit.
