Leggings vs Yoga Pants: What Is Actually Different
Designed in Scottsdale, Arizona
Leggings.
Fitted from waist to ankle. One clean line. Built to stay put.
Yoga pants.
Fitted through the thigh, then open from the knee. A bootcut or flare.
The only real difference is the lower leg. Leggings stay tight to the ankle. Yoga pants open up below the knee. Pick by what you are doing, not by the label.
01 FitWhere the leg changes
Everything starts at the knee. A legging has the same snug cut all the way down, so it tucks into any shoe and never snags. A yoga pant, usually a bootcut, follows your thigh and then relaxes over the calf and the top of your shoe.
Retailers use both words loosely, so check the product photo, not the name. If the hem is wider than the knee, it is a yoga pant. If the hem matches the knee, it is a legging.
| Question | Legging | Yoga pant |
|---|---|---|
| Hem | Tight to the ankle | Opens below the knee |
| Best for | Running, lifting, cycling, travel | Yoga, pilates, walking, errands |
| With sneakers | Clean, nothing to tuck | Hem sits over the shoe |
| Warmth | Hugs the leg, holds heat | More airflow at the calf |
02 FabricFabric beats the cut
Look at the tag before the shape. Our Luna Legging is 78 percent nylon and 22 percent spandex with medium compression and a seamless front. The Tiffany Legging uses the same 78 and 22 blend in a squat proof, high waisted cut with pockets. Cotton blends of either shape sag and go see through by week three.
Test the fabric in the dressing room or at home before you tag it. Bend, stretch the knee, check the seat in a bright light. Our guide to how to tell if leggings are squat proof takes ten seconds.
03 UseWhich one for which day
| Day | Wear | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Studio class | Yoga pant | Room to bend, nothing tight at the shin |
| Heavy lifting | Legging | Nothing catches under a bar or on the foot |
| Morning hike or walk | Either | Pick the fabric first |
| Flight or road trip | Legging | Tucks into shoes and stays smooth |
| Coffee and errands | Yoga pant | Looks put together with a clean sneaker |
Pilates is its own case, covered in what to wear to pilates class. For a hot room, see our hot yoga and studio guide.
04 MythsWhat people get wrong
Yoga pants are only for yoga.
They are for any low impact day. They just do not suit a heavy lifting session.
Leggings are always see through.
Cheap fabric is. A dense nylon and spandex blend is not. Test, do not guess.
A flare makes you look shorter.
Only if the waist sits low. A high waist and a bootcut lengthens the leg line.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between leggings and yoga pants?
Leggings are fitted from the waist to the ankle. Yoga pants are fitted through the hip and thigh and then open up from the knee as a bootcut or flare. Leggings hug the whole leg. Yoga pants leave room at the calf and over the shoe.
Can I wear yoga pants to work out?
Yes. Yoga pants suit yoga, pilates, walking and light gym days. For heavy lifting or running, a full length legging stays put better because nothing flaps or catches on the foot.
Are leggings or yoga pants better for hot weather?
Fabric matters more than cut. A moisture wicking nylon and spandex blend in either shape stays drier than cotton. Many people in Arizona heat prefer the bootcut because air moves around the calf.
Do yoga pants have to be bootcut?
No. Stores use the term loosely. A straight or wide leg pant sold for yoga counts, and so does a bootcut legging like the Luna. The giveaway is a leg that opens below the knee.
Should leggings be squat proof?
Yes. Fabric that turns sheer when stretched is a fit problem, not a style choice. Do the stretch test in good light before you commit. Our squat proof leggings test walks through it in ten seconds.
