The 10 second test.

Leggings are squat proof when they stay opaque at full stretch, in bright light, from behind. Here is how to check before you commit.

Most leggings pass in the fitting room and fail under gym lights. The mirror is flattering and the light is soft. A phone camera in daylight is neither. Run the four checks below on any pair, ours included, and you will know in ten seconds whether to keep them.

01

Pick the right light

Skip the fitting room. Stand next to a window or walk outside. Arizona sun is the harshest test you will ever give a fabric, so if a pair holds up at 7 AM in a Scottsdale parking lot, it holds up in any studio. Overhead gym fluorescents come second. Warm bedroom lamps are useless for this.

02

Stretch it over your hand

Pull a section of the fabric tight across the back of your hand. Look at your skin through it. If you see a clear skin tone or the outline of your knuckles, the fabric thins out when stretched. A squat stretches the seat fabric more than almost any other move, so this is the check that matters most.

Do it on a light pair and a dark pair side by side. The difference teaches you more than any product description.

03

Squat with a phone behind you

Prop your phone at hip height, set a ten second timer, and drop into a full squat facing away. Check the video. Look at the seat, the back of the thighs and the center seam. Then do a forward fold, because that is where sheer spots show up. Ask a friend if you do not trust the video.

04

Check the seams and waistband

Flat seams do not dig and do not show lines under a tee. A waistband that rolls down mid set is a bigger problem than sheerness, because you will be tugging it up all session. Bend, twist, and reach overhead. If you notice the waistband, so will everyone else.

How color changes the odds

Shade Shows more Test it
Black Least. Hides stretch thinning best. Indoors is fine
Mint and blush More. Light shades reveal thin spots first. Daylight, always
White and cream Most. Underwear shows through fast. Daylight, plus a seamless layer

Our color pairing guide covers what to wear with each shade once a pair passes.

Size is usually the real culprit

Fabric thins as it stretches. A pair one size too small stretches past its limit across the seat, and even a good fabric turns sheer. PILLAR cuts for athletic builds with a fit that is not boxy, so size true to your measurements and do not buy small for compression. If you are between sizes, go up. Then check the pilates outfit guide if you move at a studio, where floor work puts the most stress on the seat.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if leggings are squat proof?

Stretch the fabric over your hand in bright light. If you can see your skin tone clearly, the fabric thins when stretched and will turn sheer in a squat. Then film yourself squatting from behind in daylight and check the seat and back of the thighs.

Are black leggings always squat proof?

No, but black hides thin spots better than any other color. A cheap black pair stretched past its limit can still show skin and underwear lines, so run the stretch test on every pair.

Does size affect whether leggings are see through?

Yes. A pair one size too small stretches past its limit across the seat and turns sheer. Size true to your measurements, or go up if you are between sizes.

Why do my leggings go see through only at the gym?

Gym lighting is brighter and more direct than a fitting room, and movement stretches the fabric more than standing does. Test in daylight and in a full squat, not standing still.

What color leggings are best if I worry about sheer spots?

Start with black or another dark shade. Light shades like mint and blush are lovely but reveal thin spots first, so test them outside and wear a seamless layer underneath if needed.
