How to Fix a Stretched T-Shirt Collar, and When to Stop Trying
Care
Steam and hand shaping will tighten a stretched T-shirt collar enough that you stop seeing it, and that is the honest ceiling on every fix below. Whether it works depends on which of two things went wrong at your neck.
Most pages on this promise a two minute save with boiling water or a bowl of ice. Some of it helps. None of it separates the two failures: a collar pulled out of shape, and one that has stopped springing back.
Can a Stretched T-Shirt Collar Be Fixed?
Sometimes. A collar that sits wide but still springs back will tighten up with steam and shaping. One that no longer closes to its old line has lost its recovery, and nothing at the sink returns it.
Lay the shirt flat, hook two fingers inside the neckline, pull it out an inch and let go. Watch where it stops, not how fast. If the band settles onto the line it held before, the rib is tired but alive and the next twenty minutes are well spent. If it parks short and sits in soft waves, the shirt is finished. This is the worn version of the rack test in what makes a quality men's T-shirt.

Steam the collar inside and out, shape it by hand, dry it flat. It beats boiling water and ice water because the shaping does most of the work, and steam leaves both hands free.
What Each Repair Gives You
Steam, then shape by hand
What Comes Back
Most of what is left, and the band dries where you put it.
How Long It Holds
A few washes, then repeat it.
Ice water, folded and pressed
What Comes Back
Some, and the rib ends up stiffer.
How Long It Holds
About the same, for a colder twenty minutes.
Boiling water, then a hot dryer
What Comes Back
Least. The heat sets the band wherever it landed.
How Long It Holds
Shortest, and heat costs you elsewhere.
All three do the same thing. Heat relaxes the fibre, the fibre takes a new shape as it dries, and that shape is whatever you held it in. Boiling water disappoints because you get shrinkage with no control over where it lands. Steam wins because you hold the line while the fibre is loose. None of it regrows the stretch fibre doing the pulling.
What Is Actually Worn Out in a Stretched Collar
The band's ability to return, not its size. A rib knit holds its shape by recovering after every stretch, and that recovery runs out before the fabric does.
Drag a shirt off over your head and that strip of rib opens to the width of your skull. Most of the damage is in that one move, repeated a few hundred times. Wet weight finishes it: a soaked tee hangs from two inches of knit, one reason folding beats hanging. And when to replace your athletic wear starts counting the day a neck stops closing.
A collar does not wear out from being worn. It wears out from being opened.
How a Collar Gets Another Year
Pull the shirt off by the hem with crossed arms instead of over your head, wash cold, and dry flat or on low. A collar lasts as long as the number of times it gets forced wide.
The crossed arm exit costs nothing and changes the most. Grab the hem on both sides, cross your arms, lift. The neckline passes your head at its own width instead of stretching around it. After that: cold water, inside out, nothing hot on the way out. And if the same two shirts carry every week, the neckline shows it first. A deeper rotation beats a repair habit, and so does the crew versus V-neck call.

Does putting a stretched T-shirt collar in hot water actually work?
A little, and less than most pages claim. Hot water relaxes the fibre so the band can take a new shape, but that shape is whatever it dries in. Soak it, lay the shirt flat, and press the neckline into a clean line by hand as it dries.
Can you shrink a T-shirt collar without shrinking the whole shirt?
Yes, if you only wet the collar. Dip or steam the band alone, keep the body dry, and dry the shirt flat so nothing else pulls out of line. A full hot wash shrinks the body too, which on a shirt that already fits is a worse trade.
Why do my T-shirt collars stretch out so fast?
Usually three habits at once: dragging the shirt off by the neck, hanging it wet so the band carries the whole garment, and wearing the same two shirts every week. The band is a narrow strip of rib doing the most work, so it runs out of recovery first.
When should you replace a T-shirt with a stretched collar?
When the band stops closing back to its old line after a gentle pull. The rib has no recovery left, a repair buys a wash or two, and the shirt reads as tired however good the body looks. A collar that is wide but still springs back is worth saving.
