Care

Fold them. A hanger holds a T-shirt by two small places, the shoulder seams and the neckline, and a knit has nothing inside to spread that weight, so the shirt spends every hour in the closet pulling itself down through the two spots you cannot repair. Hang what has structure. Fold what stretches.

Most pages answering this are written by closet companies, so they treat it as a storage problem. Space matters if your closet is small. The shirt has a different opinion.

Is It Better to Hang or Fold T-Shirts?

Fold them. Hanging puts the weight of the shirt on the shoulder seams and the collar, and a knit answers load by stretching rather than by holding its shape.

A T-shirt is a knit, built from loops of yarn that slide against each other. That is why it moves with you, and why it has no internal structure. A woven shirt has a rigid grid and interfacing at the shoulders, so a hanger spreads the load. A tee has none of that, and two inches of plastic take everything.

One night on a hanger does nothing. A year of nights is a different shirt.

What Does a Hanger Do to a Knit?

It stretches the two places you notice first. The shoulder points pick up peaks that will not press out, and the neckline widens until it stops sitting flat.

Look at the shoulder of any tee that has lived in a closet. There is a nub where the plastic ended, and it stays, because the yarn has been held in that shape under tension for months. The collar goes the same way: you pull the shirt down over the hanger, or hook it by the neck, and the rib takes the load every time.

Same failure as the rest of the drawer, different cause. Pilling is abrasion. Shrinking is the fibre relaxing. This one is gravity, and it works on the clock instead of in the wash.

Which Clothes Actually Earn a Hanger?

Structured wovens earn one: button downs, chinos, jackets. Anything knit belongs folded, and the heavier the knit the more that matters.

Sort by two questions rather than habit: knit or woven, light or heavy. Knit plus heavy is the worst case, which is why a hung hoodie ends up with shoulders shaped like the thing holding it.

Polos land on the knit side, which surprises people because of the collar. The collar is the reason. It is the stiffest part of a soft garment and the part a hanger deforms first, which is why polo collars curl long before the body gives up.

What a Ruined Shoulder Line Looks Like

A peak at each shoulder point that will not press out, and a neckline that stays open after you stretch it. Either one means the shirt has been carrying its own weight too long.

Lay the shirt flat and run your thumb out along the shoulder seam. If there is a nub near the end that survives steam, the yarn is set. Then pinch the collar, pull two inches, let go. A live rib snaps back. A dead one sits where you left it.

That is where folding stops being the fix. A shirt with a dead collar is finished. Replace it, and put the next one in a drawer. If you are rebuilding, black is the place to start, and the Joey Tee is the one to reach for if you tuck.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it bad to hang t-shirts?

Over months, yes. A hanger carries the shirt from the shoulder seams and the neckline, and a knit stretches under that load rather than resisting it. A long run of it leaves shoulder peaks that will not press out and a collar that no longer closes. If you have to hang a tee, use a wide hanger and lift it on from the bottom.

How do you fold a t-shirt so it does not crease?

Fold it on a flat surface. Lay the shirt face down, bring each side in so the sleeves fold back, then fold it once from the hem. Store the stack on edge, so the bottom shirt is not holding up eight others. Anything with spandex relaxes out of a fold line within minutes of wearing.

Can you fix a t-shirt collar that got stretched on a hanger?

Sometimes. Soak the collar in hot water, lay the shirt flat, and reshape the neckline by hand while it dries. That can tighten a rib that is stretched but still elastic. It will not save a collar that has lost its recovery. If it stays open after a pull, the shirt is done.

Should you hang or fold polo shirts?

Fold them. A polo is a knit like a tee, and the collar is the part a hanger ruins first because it takes the weight and keeps the shape it is given. Fold a polo with the collar flat and the stand open so it does not crease. Give the woven shirts the closet and the polos a drawer.
