How Often Should You Wash a T-Shirt?
Care
Washing a T-shirt after every wear is the right call, and it is not what shortens its life. Heat does that, and so does owning so few tees that the same three take every cycle.
Most pages answering this belong to laundry services, so they treat it as a water bill. The garment answer is simpler. A tee sits directly on your skin, and the knit survives a washer far better than a hot dryer.
Do You Have to Wash a T-Shirt After Every Wear?
Yes, if it sat against bare skin for a full day. Nothing sits between a tee and you, so everything your skin gives off goes into the fabric.
A dress shirt has an undershirt under it. A jacket never touches you. A tee has neither. Body oil and sweat move into the knit inside the first hour and keep working after you take it off, so hanging a worn tee back in the closet is not resting it. It is giving the residue time to set.
Dark colors hide that longer, which is the only reason a black tee seems to go three days. It does not. It stops showing.
Does Washing a Tee Every Time Wear It Out Faster?
Not by itself. Nearly all the damage blamed on frequent washing comes from dryer heat and friction in an overloaded drum, and you control both.
Cold water and detergent are gentle on a knit. Tumbling it against a zipper at high heat for forty minutes is not. Cotton swells when wet and contracts when heat drives the water out, which is the mechanism behind a shirt that comes back shorter. Polyester does not shrink that way, but heat changes how it feels for good. Crowding the drum is the other half, and where pilling starts.
Care is the same across the tees: machine wash cold, tumble dry low. The Nick Tee and Joey Tee are 60 percent cotton, 35 percent rayon and 5 percent spandex. The Tim Tee runs 88 percent polyester and 12 percent spandex. Turn them inside out and pull them before the dryer finishes. The dark shirt routine goes further.

What Happens When You Only Own Three Tees?
Those three take every load in your week, so they age several times faster than the rest of the closet. A deeper drawer makes washing after every wear cost nothing.
Your drawer size decides how hard each shirt works. Three tees and a weekly wash puts all three through every cycle. Eight spreads the same wears across more shirts, and each spends more of its life on a shelf than in a drum. Nothing about the washing changed. The load per shirt did. The number worth owning works through it properly.
That is also the honest reason the re-wear advice exists. It is a workaround for a shallow drawer, not a technique.
When Is a Second Wear Actually Fine?
When the shirt stayed cool and never sat on bare skin. An hour over a base layer, or a cold evening under a jacket, and it can go back on the shelf.
The test is contact and temperature, not hours. A tee pulled over a long sleeve for an errand barely met you. One worn to a cool restaurant and off by ten never warmed up. Both are fine again.
If you do, hang it in moving air for a few hours, out of the folded stack. A tee put away damp is how a drawer starts to smell.
Which Wears Need a Wash?
Sweat, a full day, or skin contact all send it to the hamper. Short, cool and layered wears are the only ones that come back.

Performance fabric is where you stop negotiating. Polyester picks up odor a cotton blend does not and can carry it through a cycle, so a Tim Tee goes in every time. Cotton against polyester has the fibre side.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it bad to wear the same t-shirt two days in a row?
If you wore it against bare skin for a full day, yes. The oil and sweat are already in the knit, and a second day drives them deeper and makes the smell harder to wash out. The exception is a short, cool wear over another layer.
Do you have to wash a new t-shirt before wearing it?
It is worth doing once. A new tee carries finishing residue from the mill plus whatever it picked up in shipping, and a cold wash clears both. It also lets a cotton blend settle, so you learn how it fits while you can still return it.
How often should you wash a gym t-shirt?
After every session, no exceptions. A training shirt is soaked in what odor causing bacteria feed on, and polyester holds them more readily than cotton. Get it into cold water the same day, and skip fabric softener, which traps what you are rinsing out.
Can you air out a t-shirt instead of washing it?
Airing helps a barely worn shirt and does nothing for one you sweated in. Moving air dries surface moisture, which stops the damp smell, but the oil and salt in the fibres stay put. It buys a lightly worn tee a day, not a wash.
