How Many T-Shirts Should a Man Own? The Number Depends on Laundry Day
Wardrobe
If you do laundry once a week, the honest number is eight T-shirts, and only four of them are doing real work. The rest are backup, gym duty, and the one you keep sharp for going out.
Most guys own twenty and wear the same five. That is a sorting problem, not a discipline problem. Once every shirt has a job, the number stops being a guess.
How Many T-Shirts Does a Man Actually Need?
Count the days between laundry loads that you actually wear a tee, add two, and that is your everyday number. For most men washing clothes once a week, the full count lands at seven or eight shirts, split across everyday wear, training, and one you keep clean for going out.
Run it yourself. You wear a tee four days a week and wash on Sunday. Four everyday shirts cover the week, two cover training, one is the spare, one stays sharp. Eight.
What people get wrong is never the total. It is the split. Guys buy a ninth grey crew and still have nothing on for dinner, because every shirt they own does the same job.
What Should Those Eight Shirts Be?
Two shirts go with everything, one white and one black. Three are neutrals you actually like the look of. One is a color. Two are built to sweat in and never leave that lane.
The white one
The Nick Tee is the slim cut with a curved hem, so it sits clean untucked.
The black one
The shirt that turns shorts into an outfit at seven in the evening. Joey is the tailored cut with a straight hem, so it tucks clean.
Two neutrals that are not grey
Grey is what every drawer already has too much of. Beige warms up denim. Charcoal does black's job with less weight.
One shirt with actual color in it
Eight neutrals is a uniform. Maroon is the easy first color because it still behaves like a neutral against denim and tan.
Two that only train
Keep training shirts out of the everyday count and both halves last longer. The Tim Tee is 88 percent polyester and 12 percent spandex, moisture wicking and quick drying.
What the Build Costs
Owning fewer shirts is not restraint. It is admitting which ones you were going to wear anyway.

How Long Should a Shirt Stay in the Rotation?
A tee earns its spot until the neck loses its shape or the color goes flat. Wash cold and tumble dry low and that window stretches well past a year of regular wear. Heat is what ends most shirts, not time.
The neckline goes first, and it goes because of the dryer. High heat relaxes the ribbing and ironing will not bring it back. Our care guide for performance pieces covers the rest.
When a shirt goes, replace that slot instead of adding to the pile. A rotation stays a rotation only if the count stays fixed, the same logic behind buying fewer and better pieces.
When Do You Genuinely Need More Than Eight?
Two cases. You train more days than you do laundry, or your job puts you in a tee five days a week. Both are fixed by adding shirts to one slot, not by adding shirts everywhere.
Lift six days a week, take the training slot to four and leave the rest alone. Wear a tee to work every day, take the everyday slot to six. What you should not do is buy two more of everything, which is how twenty shirts produce five outfits.
The same math runs for collared shirts, covered in how many golf polos a man actually needs. Still deciding on a cut? Start with what to look for in an athletic tee.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many T-shirts should a man own?
Seven or eight is enough for most men who do laundry once a week. Count the days you actually wear a tee between wash days and add two for backup. Split that total across everyday shirts, training shirts and one kept clean for going out.
Is it bad to own too many T-shirts?
It is not bad so much as pointless. Past a certain count you stop wearing the extras, and the shirts you like get worn just as often anyway. Eight shirts chosen on purpose get you dressed faster than twenty that were not.
How many white T-shirts should I have?
One is enough if you wash weekly, two if you wear white often or layer it under an open shirt. White shows wear faster than any other color, so the second is less about outfits and more about always having a clean one.
Do gym shirts count toward the number?
Keep them separate. Training shirts get washed more often, and mixing the two runs your good shirts through twice the cycles they need. Two performance tees covers most training weeks.
